FACULTY BIOGRAPHY
Joyce: My current or recent work includes Joyce and early cinema (1896-1909) in Ireland, the criticism of fellow Paris-exile Walter Benjamin, fairs and Irish Orientalism as contexts for “Araby, and Joyce’s interest in Kabbalah (shared with Yeats). 19th Century American literature: I’m editing Poe’s Philadelphia book reviews in two magazines, Burton’s and Graham’s for the Collected Works. I also track Poe Web sites, anddo the “Poe in Cyberspace” column twice a year in the Edgar Allan Poe Review. I’m also interested in Melville and those far smaller fish, Charles Frederick Briggs, Evert Augustus Duyckinck, and George Lippard. New Media: I’m webmaster for the James Joyce Society at joycesociety.org, did a Ulysses hypertext demo at andromeda.rutgers.edu/~ehrlich/jjtm, andpost my Poe stuff at eapoe.info, including a Poe webliography. I’m in interested in how the evolution of printed and digital media in the last 300 years has reflected and also affected literacy.
